Reading Subject Leadership – 3 date course
This course is aimed at English Leads and Senior Leaders, and is being Facilitated by Roxanne Jackson.
For English leads of senior leaders who are looking to develop reading as part of their school development plan.
Scope of this CPD
Session 1: Reading for pleasure – Reading for Pleasure is the entitlement of every child, yet how can we foster readers’ desire and engagement? Through research, we have gathered evidence of what we feel are the key areas for fostering this in your school.
Session 2: Reading and Oracy – One of the best strategies for developing reading comprehension is to sit oracy at the heart of practice. While underpinning teaching and learning with oracy, we can, with a few tweaks, ensure that we are both strengthening comprehension strategies and explicitly enhancing oracy skills at the same time.
You can use this workshop with a whole staff group to exemplify many of the strategies and techniques that can be drawn on to develop key areas of the curriculum. Based around The Squirrels who Squabbled by Rachel Bright and Jim Field, it also illustrates the planning process for using a high-quality text at the heart of our teaching of reading for meaning.
Session 3: Reading comprehension: how to develop a whole-school philosophy – Looks at strategies for explicitly teaching reading comprehension and developing the lifelong skills needed to become effective readers.
School Commitment required for this CPD
Each session is designed to take two and a half hours, with gap tasks to be completed between sessions. Gap Tasks are based on the individual focus of the session and will require participants to trial and deliver new strategies in school reading for the visit in summer to look at impact. Teachers and leaders must book onto and attend all these sessions.
Impact and Benefits of this CPD
Develop knowledge further of how to engage reading at the heart of your school and to bring enjoyment and pleasure in reading rather than it being seen as an isolated lesson.
