English Subject Leadership – 4 date course

This course is aimed at Teachers and Subject Leads, and is being facilitated by Hannah Crawford.

Attendees should be English leads or teachers with responsibility of developing English within the school and an interest in driving and refining the teaching of English throughout the school. Scope of this CPD :

Session 1: Writing for pleasure

Writing for pleasure has begun to take hold in policy, school curricula and classrooms. We see the long-term impact of motivation, engagement, and attitudes and how these impact on attainment. But what of writing for pleasure? This session supports whole-school exploration of writing for pleasure: its definition, its current profile in school and the possible impact of a writing for pleasure pedagogy.

Session 2: Developing grammar subject knowledge

Refresh and secure key grammar subject knowledge with this session. It is intended to reinforce existing knowledge while also ensuring that you are familiar with current terminology used in the teaching of grammar. By ensuring you are confident in grammar, you can ensure that your staff are confident and secure in their own grasp of grammar, and this will build a solid foundation for consistent support as pupils develop skills in the effective analysis and use of language.

Session 3: A poetry lovers’ classroom

This session will help you support whole-staff development and enthusiasm for embedding the joy and power of poetry in the classroom. You can what you learn from this session to refresh and renew your whole school approach to the teaching of poetry. It will help explore the benefits of creating classrooms full of poetry lovers, and support staff in reflecting on current practice and expertise. The presentation is full of practical ideas for exploring poetry in the classroom, including trying out kennings, having a ‘talk like Shakespeare’ day and playing with personification.

Session 4: Whole school approach to teaching vocabulary

Develop a whole-school approach to the teaching of vocabulary with our two presentations. The first presentation looks at the importance of vocabulary instruction whilst the second explores key principles and practice. They are designed for literacy leaders for use within staff meetings and INSET days to ensure confidence and consistency across the school.

School Commitment required for this CPD

Each session is designed to take two and a half hours, with gap tasks to be completed between sessions. Gap Tasks are based on the individual focus of the session and will require participants to deliver whole school CPD in the area to allow the improvement of English across the school. Teachers and leaders must book onto and attend all these sessions.

Impact and Benefits of this CPD

Through attending these sessions, you will have the opportunity to develop understanding in areas under key research topics in the world of education as well as areas of the English curriculum known for being the area’s most teachers are less confident in teaching. Through these sessions you will gain subject knowledge which you will be able to impart back at your school to improve teaching confidence.
